New LGBTQ+ inclusive programme to launch in January
We are pleased to announce a new inclusive programme heading to the Community Trust, that will run every fortnight from Wednesday 10th January 2024.
We believe that anyone should be free to play football; regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or football ability. Unfortunately, homophobia and transphobia still exists in the game, leaving some feeling they can't participate or be part of a club.
Pride Park Pride aims to bring the local LGBTQ+ community together, and provide a safe space to socialise, chat and enjoy football in the heart of the club and in our own home.
''What better way to reach out to more of the Derbyshire community, than an open football programme. Various clubs are LGBTQ+ allies but currently, there is only one LGBTQ+ inclusive football club in Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire... we want to change that. We aim to develop a team from this new programme, but if we can help just one person feel comfortable in the game, then we will be even more proud of this new and exciting opportunity.''
Josh Wing | Pride Park Pride founder, Derby County Community Trust
The first session will be hosted at Harrison's Hub from 6pm, which will outline the aims of the programme, meet the staff involved and find out what support is in place.
Participants will constantly have the chance to voice what they would want from the sessions and build the new initiative around them.
''Team sports can be a daunting place for the LGBTQ+ community, especially for trans people and we want a space for people to feel and safe and enjoy playing football.''
Amelia Jones | EDI Lead, Derby County Community Trust
Beyond the launch date, future sessions will also have a football element. Participants will meet at Derby University, where small-sided matches will take place amongst those involved in the programme.
For safeguarding purposes, these sessions are currently only on offer for 18+.
