In June 2026, Derby County Community Trust held it’s first-ever Founders Ride – a challenge that brought together supporters of the Trust for a three-day adventure.
The inaugural event saw riders take on a 250-mile route from Burnley FC’s Turf Moor to Derby County FC’s Pride Park Stadium, visiting all 12 Football League founding clubs along the way while raising vital funds to support Derby County Community Trust’s work in the community.
More than just a cycling challenge, the Founders Ride was an opportunity for participants to push themselves beyond their limits and create memories with a group of like-minded supporters.
Day one saw the team complete a gruelling 71 miles visiting the homes of Accrington Stanley, Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers and Everton FC along the way.
After a rest and refuel the team headed to Stoke City and Wolverhampton Wanderers on day two. The final day of the ride consisted of a visit to the Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion followed by Villa Park and Meadow Lane before heading home to the home of the Rams, Pride Park Stadium.
Despite the physical demands of covering hundreds of miles over three days, riders spoke about the incredible atmosphere and support that helped them complete the journey.
One participant described the experience simply as: ‘An epic cycling tour’
For many riders, the friendships and camaraderie built along the way were one of the highlights of the challenge. One rider said: “The most amazing experience with brilliant like-minded people, the camaraderie, banter, support and laughs will last a lifetime. If you ride a bike you need to experience The Founders!”
The event was made possible thanks to months of planning from the DCCT team and a support crew who provided encouragement and motivation throughout the route. One rider praised the organisation behind the challenge: “Biggest shout out must go to the support crew/event organisers. They absolutely nailed it with the planning, organisation and support/motivation during the event. Would 10/10 recommend!”
The support and teamwork between riders also helped make the challenge achievable, with participants encouraging each other through every stage of the journey.
A rider said: “Just do it! It is a challenge but the outstanding support from the team, the regular breaks and the superb teamwork meant it was achievable. It might seem expensive but considering what’s included it is great value!
“The satisfaction of completing the ride and raising money for the local community is just brilliant. The welcome at Pride Park was also fantastic!’
The Founders Ride was not only about completing the miles, but about making a difference. A total of £5,000 was raised to support DCCT’s projects, which use the power of sport to improve lives across Derby and Derbyshire.
Reflecting on the first-ever event, another participant highlighted the unique experience: “A really well organised event which although challenging was a brilliant laugh and great support for the group from within the riders and also from the Community Trust and Huub. A really good thing to do to raise money. I have done many organised cycle trips and this ride ran as sweet as a nut.’
When asked what they would say to someone considering taking part in a future Founders Ride, one rider said: “Tough challenge, do the training, be prepared, you’ll have an amazing time and meet amazing people.”
The success of the inaugural Founders Ride has created the foundations for what promises to become a memorable annual challenge.
