Marking Refugee Week of Action in Derby

Published on 18 June 2026 in News.

To mark Refugee Week 2026, Derby County Community Trust, in partnership with Derbyshire Refugee Solidarity, proudly hosted the third annual Refugee Football Tournament at Derby Racecourse Hub.

Welcoming teams from across the country, the day kicked off with a competitive group stage before progressing into Champions League and Europa League–style finals. More than 100 players took part, representing teams made up of refugees and asylum seekers now living in the UK. Participants hailed from a wide range of countries including Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iran, Namibia, Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan.

This event is about far more than football. It serves as a powerful reminder of the role sport can play in creating community, building confidence and fostering belonging. By bringing people together on the pitch, the tournament celebrates friendship, cooperation and healthy competition, offering a space where individuals from diverse backgrounds can connect, express themselves and feel part of something bigger.

Congratulations go to Leicester City Green and Coventry City 2, who emerged as tournament champions after delivering consistently impressive performances.
