Will Marshall has been part of Derby County Community Trust’s DS Active programme for more than 10 years. During that time, the weekly sessions have become an important part of his routine, giving him the chance to play football, spend time with friends and enjoy new experiences.  

When asked why he enjoys coming to DS Active, Will doesn’t hesitate. He said: “I like playing football. I just like being here really. It’s been really fun.”

The sessions have also introduced him to people who have become close friends over the years: “I’ve made new friends. I do like meeting everyone. The sessions have helped me, I just love the sessions.”

Will also reflected on his favourite memory during his time on the programme, a special moment at Pride Park Stadium: “Going on the pitch at half-time at a Derby game, walking out in front of 30,000 fans.”

When asked what he would say to someone thinking about joining DS Active, Will’s answer was simple: “Come along.”

A parent’s perspective

Will’s dad Peter has watched the programme become a significant part of his son’s life over the last decade.

He explained: “Will started doing DS Active from day one. It must be over 10 or 11 years ago when he first started, and there are still a few in the group who have been there since the beginning.” 

Before joining the programme, Will wasn’t involved in any organised sports groups. His dad believes the sessions have opened up opportunities that otherwise wouldn’t have been available. 

“It’s allowed him to play a lot of football, which he wouldn’t normally have done. He’s also made a lot of friends in the group. They see each other outside of this as well, so it boosts his confidence massively.”

Over the years, he’s noticed changes that go beyond what happens on the pitch. He said: “He’s certainly fitter. He’s certainly faster. He’s a lot more confident and chatty.”

Having a regular session each week has also given Will something to look forward to.

“He volunteers in a shop a couple of days a week, then he comes here on a Wednesday. He’s got a bit of routine in his life and he really looks forward to it.

“He keeps in touch with the group on WhatsApp, and they all look forward to it. It just gives him a bit of focus in the week.”

For Will’s family, seeing him take part in the programme has been incredibly rewarding. Peter said: “Prior to DS Active, he wasn’t involved in any sports group. Once he started this and carried it on for more than 10 years, as parents, it’s made us very proud.”

The programme has also created memories they will never forget.

“We’ve seen him on the pitch at half-time at Derby. He’s played on pitches at Charlton and Newcastle and places like that. It makes us very proud as parents.”

His advice to other families considering DS Active is straightforward: “Don’t hesitate. It’s a friendly bunch and they have a great laugh. I’d recommend it thoroughly. Don’t hesitate to get in touch and come along.”
