Dennis, at the age of 96, joined the Derby County Community Trust Falls Prevention programme last year, working closely with Adult Health Manager, Adam Woolley.

The Falls Prevention programme is designed to support individuals who require additional assistance to live safely and independently. Dennis, who lives alone, was referred to the programme by the Complex Care team via Primary Healthcare, Derby, after being identified as a patient who would benefit from the DCCT Falls programme.

The support given is reflected in a range of exercises to help build strength, improve steadiness on his feet and increase mobility. This is to help give the participants more confidence and independence, helping to minimise the fear of falling.

“Adam showed me a range of exercises, mostly using a chair. It’s a lot of legwork with resistance bands. They’re very good because I can sit and use them whilst watching TV.”

Dennis understands the importance of staying active and keeping his body moving. He shared stories of his younger self, being a PTI in the Army, before working as a youth club leader for an incredible 40 years.

When asked how he has improved, Dennis shares he can now walk better and has been able to regain some of his independence, “My local pub is a mile walk there and back, which I look forward to every Monday.”

The Falls Prevention programme hasn’t just improved Dennis’ physical health, it has also had a mental impact. Dennis describes “living on your own can be lonely, I don’t often see many people. I look forward to the visits and seeing Adam every Wednesday.”

Alongside the social aspect, Dennis explained he now feels in a routine with his exercises, giving him a task for the day and keeping him accountable.

When asked what goal he works towards, Dennis shares, “There is one thing I would love to do. My wife and I were on the committee of an over-50s club, and we had a dance hall in the town… I would love to be able to dance again.

Adam has been visiting Dennis for 6 weeks and has said the following. “Since my first phone call with Dennis, he has been engaged 100% in taking part in the programme and trying new exercises. We have set daily goals which he is achieving, helping him maintain the best standard of life he can.”
