Derby County Host Regional Walking Football Tournament

Derby County Community Trust hosted the EFL Trust’s Regional Walking Football Tournament yesterday (Wednesday 19th April).

Teams representing Derby County, Burton Albion, Nottingham Forest, Notts County, Chesterfield, Mansfield Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Shrewsbury Town, Walsall. Port Vale, Crewe Alexandra, Coventry City and Wolverhampton Wanderers all made the trip to Derby Arena to take part.

Walking Football, as the name suggests, is a slow-paced version of the beautiful game which is aimed specifically at the over 50s. It is designed to help people keep an active lifestyle and offer opportunities for people to dust off their boots and get back playing.

The Derby County Community Trust’s walking football team, who play in the Derbyshire Walking Football League, were representing Derby County at the Regional Final, which was one of six taking place across the country.

Following four draws and two losses in the group stage, Derby didn’t progress to the semi-finals amongst what was a commendably high standard.

Notts County were the overall winners, beating Kidderminster 2-1 in the final. Both finalists will now go on to the National finals where they will take on the top two teams from each of the remaining Regional competitions.

Following the event, Luke Wilkinson from the Derby County Community Trust said: “It was nice to be picked to host the regional finals by the EFL Trust and show what we have to offer.”

He added: “Walking Football is a growing sport that we are looking to integrate more and more into the Community Trust’s programmes, so it was good to showcase it with such a big event.

“A big thanks goes to the DCCT team for representing Derby County so well, on another day I think they could have gone much further in the competition. That takes nothing away from Notts County though, they were worthy winners on the day.”

Derby County Community Trust host a number of Walking Football sessions for both males and females. Register and interest by calling the office on 01332 416140
